MATT 2006 Officer Elections

There is change in the wind for MATT.  For starters, the very talented and witty Jason Carpenter has stepped down from his position of Secretary/Newsletter publisher.  Jason cited that he has become very busy recently.  I am not sure why he is so busy but perhaps the used diaper wipe refill tub with some stamps and a few dollars (not near enough for a new bike) he passed along to me after the elections is a clue.  Thanks Jason for your very entertaining and informative Newsletters.

New potential:  Ken Brown instigated discussion on MATT hosting a national event in the future.  While everyone agrees we cannot host a national at our Trenton grounds, Ken proposed investigating the use of land running north and south just west of I435 on the Kansas side.  This land features a number of quarries and some great natural terrain, with some kind of a trail or dirt road running thru it and multiple access points.  More discussions will be held at future meetings.

More change:  Jim Bridges announced we are very close to having our federally recognized ‘Non Profit Club’ status.  With this in mind, it was unanimously agreed upon to elect a three person board of directors for MATT.  These three people are:  Steve Morgan, Carl Hopkins and Jim Bridges.  The club members are still entitled to vote for new officers.

Moving on:  The Little General Ken Brown has stepped down after 2 years of dutiful duty as club President.  Thanks Ken for your service to the club.  It is rumored that Ken will represent MATT on the Central Regional Series committee next year as well as promote the North Central Series, the East Central Series, the West Central Series and the South by Southeast Western Central Regional Series.

Immediate change:  The officially railroaded individuals “elected” to office for FY2007 are:

                                    President                                  Randy Dennis

                                    Vice President                          Jim Thornton

                                    Treasurer                                  Carl Hopkins

                                    Secretary                                  Kelly Echterling

Congratulations to all the new MATT officers.

New faces:  Congratulations to new MATT members Kirby Woolston (his son Dillon also rides) and Steve Smith.  Both Kirby and Steve began their trials careers at the Carpenter’s April event and are both doing very well and having a great time.  Welcome to MATT and don’t forget to sign up for Trialmaster slots for next year!

New ideas:  Some suggestions were discussed for either spending some of the clubs treasury funds for worthwhile projects or ideas like more gravel for our roads on the property, possibly paying for entry fees for club members contesting national events or reducing dues.  Put your thinking caps on, I am sure we will discuss these and other suggestions at future meetings.

Change in venue:  A discussion was started as to where the Christmas Party would be held.  Diane Carver suggested using a hall that we could get through someone she knows.  It would have plenty of space, tables, chairs, music, TV for playing trials video’s and a pool table.  More to come on this later.

Next trials:  Sunday before Thanksgiving, November 19th.

HOT DOG TRIALS 2006

Just like the Quarry Cup 2006, great sections, great fun, great food, great day on Saturday and rain all night before the Sunday event!  I could have been home watching the rain outside and the TV inside.  But look at all the fun I would have missed!  After all it didn’t rain during the event until the last loop and that was only on a small group of Intermediate and Master stragglers.  Seriously, the sections were very fun and not muddy at all!!  Just a few very slippery rocks and logs.  Bruce Carver and Carl Hopkins did an excellent job as trialsmasters.

I do have a suggestion though.  I think the name should be changed to “HOT DOG, BRATS, ITALIAN  SAUSAGE, REALLY BIG POT OF CHILI WITH ALL THE FIXIN’S AND BOUNTIFUL DESSERTS INCLUDING APPLE CRISP AND ICE CREAM TRIALS”.   Many thanks to Eva, Bruce, Diane and all other contributors for a great feed after a fun ride!

Bruce and Carl laid out 8 sections starting in the show off rocks by the pavilion, and then running down the east quarry loop, down into the watershed wash and up Grundy gulch to finish the loop.

A quick note of interest:  The very talented Master class rider from Nebraska, Steve Clark, was seen riding the Master lines with Bruce on Sunday.  Glad to see Steve riding again after his injury at our quarry 2 years ago.

NOTABLE QUOTABLES:

Jason Carpenter:  “I thought the sections were good.” (Sure, look at his score!)

Scott Carpenter:  “I have never done that before” (after hanging his skidpan on a rock and parking his bike upside down in a perfect three point landing.  Unfortunately the exit was another 15 feet away.

Adam Hopkins:  “I feel pretty good about today.  I was only 5 points off of Scott.”

Steve Morgan:  “I rode terrible. I just can’t stand that pink section ribbon.  Or maybe I should have gotten more sleep last night.”  Must have been a fun party around the campfire Saturday night.

Ken Brown:  “Geeze, look at those long legs!”  Watching Steve Morgan with a long dab in #5.

Mike Carpenter:  “Man, that section number 7 (Grundy’s Gulch) is a great trials section.”

Kelly Echterling:  “I should have paid closer attention to Scott when he stuck the three point landing in #1.”  After going upside down in section 7.

Paul Turnbull:  “You can always tell when I have a bad ride.”  Ken Brown cheers.

Ken Brown:  “Geeze, look at those long legs!”   Watching Adam Hopkins with a long dab in #8.

Chris Williams: “I have a 9 tooth front sprocket, everything is 3rd gear!”

Jim Bridges:  “4th gear, wide open!” on his new Raga Gas Gas.

Kirby:  “My best ride was that section where we went between the big rock and the tree.  I finally cleaned it!”  Of course everybody knows that was section #5.

Bill Wachendorfer: “Gee Doris, did you leave any ice cream and cobbler for everyone else?”

Nathan Dennis:  “Move him up!” When Kirby was announced as first place amateur.

Randy Dennis:  “Oh I, I guess I will.”  When nominated at elections.

Kerri Dennis:  “No sir, I will not be vice president!”  When nominated at elections.

Nathan Dennis:  “I’ll be treasurer if I get a new bike!”  When nominated at elections.

Kelly Echterling:  “I knew I should have jumped on the VP position.”  After getting elected secretary.

Dawson Dennis:  “I WANTED to be secretary!”  Kelly wanted him too!

Here is the “more to come” on the Christmas Party:

The hall was not available so Carl and Chris Hopkins have graciously offered to host the MATT party once again!  Thank you Carl and Chris!  The date is Saturday, December 9th.   According to Chris, guests may start arriving any time after 6:00.  Bring a snack & beverage of your choice.  Chris will have hot apple cider and coffee.

Directions to the Hopkins:

 From the South:

Get to I-29 & 64th Street (also known as 45 Highway & also Tom Watson Parkway).

Go West on Tom Watson Parkway about 3 miles or so to Blair Road (it's a light just past the Kwik Stop),

Turn right, go to Kerns Drive and turn left (this is to the left just as Blair Road curves to the right).  We'll put a loop marker by the light post as a marker. You will go down in a little valley and then back up again.  We are about the 4th house on the left once you pass the stone Weatherby Lake sign.

From the North & East:

Take 152 West to Amity Exit.  Take the exit and turn left at the stop sign.  Go to Barry Road and turn right.  Go to West Side Drive and follow it until it turns into Kerns Drive.  this is a very winding road just stay on it and don't make any right hand turns onto any other streets and you will be fine.  We are about the 4th house on the right once it turns into Kerns.  We'll put a loop marker by the street sign as a marker.

Call the Hopkins at 816-741-5436 for directions if these don't work for you.
