APRIL 2008 MATT NEWSLINE
NOTICE: LOOK HERE-> MATT trials this SATURDAY! APRIL 5TH!
NOTICE: LOOK HERE-> MATT trials at Ken Brown’s place this SATURDAY!
MATT’s February trials got rescheduled to THIS SATURDAY 4/5/08 at Ken Brown’s ranch! I spoke to Ken Monday and everything is on schedule plus the weather looks to be great! Ken has gotten help from Dale Malasek, Bruce Carver, Paul Turnbull and the Gray boys: Seth, Luke and Lane (what a great name for a trials rider!). There will be a variety of sections: hillsides, ledges and creek sections, including everyone’s favorite double section in the creek. Conditions are expected to be cool but dry and great traction. See you there!
MATT trials at Ken’s Ranch this SATURDAY, April 5th: Start time is the usual 11:00am. The address is 27760 215th St. in Easton, KS. Pop this address into your favorite map site or call Ken Brown at 913-772-8414.
The Carpenter Clan put on another great event at the home of Mike and Cheryl Carpenter in Excelsior Springs. They even remodeled their home with a huge bay window at the end of the grate room so that spectators could watch sections from the comfort of home! What fabulous hosts’! With the potential for snow and the promise of wet conditions, Mike and his boys laid out very good sections that were not “over the top”. This was well received by myself and I believe others who are still getting our trials legs back for the new season.
In the Novice class, Dawson had a rough first loop but finished with outstanding 2nd and 3rd loops. Just not outstanding enough to edge out new Novice rider John “Mr. Consistency” Walsh from south Missouri. In the Amateur class, aside from great low scores from Jim Thornton, the class was hotly contested. Three very good up and coming young riders battled it out every loop. Congrats Zayn, Nathan and Seth! Keep up the good work and before long you’ll be challenging Jason for top club honors! Harley and Bob had a fun time in the SR Amateur class, well, they were still smiling at the end of the day so it must have been fun! The Intermediate class is always good competition and today was no different. What was different was the emergence of a new Ken Brown! Ken took the podium on his new 2006 Raga GasGas. Ken says he feels the best he has in years! The knee didn’t hurt too bad, the shoulder didn’t hurt too bad and the bike ran great. The Raga is easier to balance, the motor never died and Ken’s card had no fives. Ken credits the bike for a big part of his success. So look out for Ken in the always popular and competitive Intermediate class! In the Expert class Grieg Engel brought an adoring (and cute) fan club to cheer him on to victory and he did not disappoint! Steve and Matt duked it out in the middle of the class and Kelly (me) checked out mentally before the event was over (began?). Word of advice to all competitors: Don’t try to go to work the morning of a competition and expect to do very well at either! I gotta give it up for the Masters. We can again proclaim them the “Traction Masters” as they performed miraculous feats coming out of the mud with short runs to launch over huge rocks and other challenges. Marc built a metal ramp to put at the end, but not a part of, one of the sections to allow riders to launch or not to launch up and over to a huge rock wall. Many thought this was fun, I don’t know first hand. It looks as though Jason will remain in command of the Master class until the aforementioned young up and comers come up! But also of note is how well Bruce Carver has been riding. Way to go Bruce! Keep up the good work!
Some fun was also had with the little guys at the event. The Carpenter grandsons and Amanda Engel were having a great time! Trials really is a family affair. Matt Hopkins had fun teasing and playing with the three youngsters. Carl and Chris, there may be more grandkids coming your way! Matt, you gotta watch what you teach these little guys. This leads me to the QOUTE OF THE DAY: As Matt was coming to the exit of section 7, Amanda Engel (3 or 4 years old) began yelling at him: “You ride like a girl! You ride like a girl!” Matt had been trying to get Amanda to say that to me as I rode, but Amanda has a keen eye for the truth and for trials riding skills!
