Some people will go to great lengths to ride this great sport of MotoTrials. This is the case with Ben Winterer. When a person really wants to go riding and there is 4 ft of snow in their front yard, what do they do? Road Trip! The Feb trials in Trenton, MO was the place of our first sighting of the Minnesotan. Ben made this first trek solo and did some riding in Nebraska before he found his way down to Trenton, MO for the weekend. Ben drove all this way to get away from the snow, only to have it snow the Sat night before the event. Luckily the weather didn't accumulate a lot so the white stuff didn't stick around long on Sun. The Feb event didn't have the best turn out rider wise, but there was some stiff competition for him to face. Ben took full advantage of his slick weather riding skills and came away victorious. After the event, sore and exhausted yet filled with joy from his many days of riding, Ben loaded up and headed back North. Time for Road trip #2. This had to have been a more pleasant drive down for Ben. He somehow tricked his lovely wife Jennifer into making the trip to Ken Brown's place in Easton, KS for the first March trials. Ken and Dale Malasek had set up some great sections only to have 48" of rain Sat night force these guys to make some changes Sun morning. A lot of the sections were on hillsides so to make them ride able, splits had to be taken out. The good thing about the hillside sections, with the sun and 60 mph winds, by the 2nd loop these sections had great traction. Oddly enough, there was no Novice riders and only Bob Sanderson showed up to represent the Amateurs. The Intermediate class had 5 strong. Paul Turnbull came out and showed he still has the skills to pay the bills as he won the class by 10pts. Mike Carpenter was the next closest, and Lane Gray rounded out the podium. The Expert class had all the star power with the likes of Luke Gray, Seth Gray, Josh Nutsch, Dale Malasek, and Ben Winterer. If Trials made trading cards, these are 5 I would want to have in my collection. There is a legend, legend in the making, and 3 up and coming studs. Since Dale (legend) was trials master, he just rode exhibition, Ben (legend in the making) pulled more tricks out of his bag and won again! (He is now 2 for 2. Is he going to make it 3 for 3?) Josh just edged out Seth for the 2nd spot. Master class was full of the has-beens (except for Bruce) and their riding showed it. Jason Carpenter showed that you don't have to practice (ever!) to be good. He was able to slide past Future-Present-Past All-Star rider Bruce Carver and Bill Sanderson for the win. Thank you to Dale and Ken for setting up a great trials. For those that don't know, this was Ken's last ride for a while as he is headed overseas for Military duty. He hopes to be back at the beginning of next year. Let's hope and pray for a safe return home. We are going to miss him! Results below.
